Baratang Limestone Caves

Millions-of-Years-Old Stalactite Caves & Mangrove Boat Safari in Baratang

The Baratang Limestone Caves are one of the most remarkable natural wonders in Andaman & Nicobar, formed over millions of years by calcium carbonate sea erosion and mineral deposits. Located deep inside the dense tropical jungle of Baratang Island, these caves feature magnificent hanging stalactites and rising stalagmites that glow under flashlight beams. Reaching the caves is an adventure in itself: visitors board high-speed motorboats at Nilambur Jetty that zip through a dense, tunnel-like mangrove creek network, followed by a 1.2 km shaded boardwalk trek through local villages and tropical forest.

Active Geological Wonders

Baratang Mud Volcano

Rare Active Mud Volcano Vents in Middle of Baratang Rainforest

The Baratang Mud Volcano is one of the extremely rare active mud volcano sites in South Asia, located 7 km from Nilambur Jetty in Baratang. Formed by natural subterranean methane gas and mineral water pressure, these mud vents bubble continuously, ejecting grey clay mud onto the surface into small miniature cone-shaped craters. A short 300-meter paved walkway from the parking area leads up a small hillock surrounded by tropical trees to the mud volcano clearing. Visitors can observe natural gas bubbles popping out of the mud craters in real-time.

Visitors board evening motorboats from Nayadera Jetty that anchor quietly near the islet as the sun sets over the sea. The sight and sound of thousands of chirping green birds filling the orange sunset sky is an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and photographers.

Known for its gentle curved shoreline, shallow warm ocean waters, and serene mangrove forest borders, Baludera remains completely uncrowded.
