Historical & HeritageHistoric Kala Pani Freedom Memorial & Iconic Light & Sound Show in Port Blair
Cellular Jail, famously known as Kala Pani (Black Water), stands as an enduring monument to India’s struggle for freedom. Constructed by the British colonial government between 1896 and 1906, this grim prison was specially designed to isolate political prisoners in solitary confinement. Located at Atlanta Point in Port Blair, the architectural layout features seven wings radiating outwards from a central watchtower like spokes of a wheel—allowing a single guard to monitor all 693 individual cells. Distinguished freedom fighters including Vinayak Damodar (Veer) Savarkar, his brother Ganesh Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, Yogendra Shukla, and Sachindra Nath Sanyal suffered inhuman tortures within these walls. Today, Cellular Jail is preserved as a sacred National Memorial, hosting a comprehensive Freedom Fighters Museum, the eternal flame Swatantrya Jyot, and the world-famous evening Light and Sound Show.
